English

The English staff at Cromer is committed to delivering a broad range of learning experiences across all facets of English literature and media texts. Students are encouraged to achieve their best and develop a lifelong love of language and literature.
Cromer has developed a proud tradition of excellence with students regularly featuring in the top bands of HSC and SC English in all courses.
At Cromer we also recognise that, for many students the study of English is a challenging exercise and that these students need clear direction and basic skills development. Differentiation takes place on a number of levels. Tasks may be modified and students who are struggling may seek assistance from their teacher or the STLA. Students from non English speaking backgrounds are supported by the ESL staff.
All students are encouraged to achieve their personal best in English by liaising with their teachers and seeking clarification on all tasks. Drafting and redrafting of class assessment work is essential to enable students to improve their skills.
A wide range of texts are studied in each stage including the works of Shakespeare, Aboriginal texts, contemporary texts and 19th and 20th century texts. In our selection of texts for study we aim to inspire and challenge our students to enhance and extend their understanding and appreciation of the English language in all its forms.
In each stage students study prose fiction and non-fiction, poetry, drama, media and film. Students are encouraged to challenge the dominant ideas in each text and come to an enhanced understanding of the world and their part in it as competent sophisticated users of language.
The English faculty has an open door policy and parents are welcome to contact us if they have any concerns about their children’s progress.
